Korra Needs Some Love

Around a month ago I finished The Legend of Korra: Book 2 finale.
The feels were wonderful; so very wonderful.

I'm actually glad Korra has lost her connection with the previous Avatars; she needed to start "anew". She's constantly compared to them and hasn't gotten the chance to evolve into actually being herself rather than the new Avatar Aang, another "legend", so on and so forth. We seriously need to cut her some slack.

The events leading up to the finale were just far too beautiful; particularly the spirit world scene with the much loved Iroh and Little Korra. It was like watching ATLA all over again and the wave of nostalgia hit me hard, as well as the scenes involving Tenzin, Kya & Bumi on their search for Jinora and the unexpected presence of General Zhao as well as a much older Avatar Aang.

As the finale arrived, I saw Korra as a helpless teenage girl when confronted with Unalaq's "Dark Avatar"; there was practically nothing else she could have done. No other past Avatar has had to deal with a spiritual force so dangerous & intense like this before except Wan who originally sealed Vaatu for eternity to begin with for that very reason. I highly doubt Aang wouldn't have done a much better job. Firelord Ozai only knew one element and controlled it with great power yet was defeatable, but Unalaq's spirit was a combination of all that was sinister, disturbing and soul draining when paired with Vaatu's. His energy/soul bending technique was twisted; the very fact he was heartless is proven when he uses this on Jinora whom is nothing more than an innocent child prior to these events.

However I do agree Korra was incredibly naive, though given Unalaq was her uncle; there's no doubt in my mind she thought she could trust at least one of her own relatives until it was left too late. Since it unravelled we've seen her break down, realise her mistakes, try her best to solve issues that still cling on to her and for once we see Korra's character development go in the direction we hoped for after her past lives were severed in a twist of cruel yet predicted fate by UnaVaatu.  I won't deny I stared hopelessly at my laptop screen though watching as one by one each of her past lives was erased from her memory, it was rather heart wrenching and seeing Unalaq actually enjoy tormenting her in the worst possible way was just...

She's actually normal and she's by no means flawless, unstoppable or as strong to a certain extent.. Since the opening of the Northern & Southern spirit portals, Harmonic Convergence has had a major impact on the world due to the fortunate & incredibly lucky defeat of UnaVaatu through using the cosmic energy of the universe while meditating within the Tree of Time. Korra eventually got there in the end and will now have to embrace what is to come with open arms. I'm glad the Makorra ship has now come to some form of closure as well; I think she's far better just being by herself and focusing on herself as the Avatar rather than on and off romantic relationships. She needs to develop more physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually and with everything that's happened- it'll do her the world of good.

I have high hopes for this Korra; she's somewhat been reborn and I for one look forward to Book 3. Perhaps she will reconnect with her past lives? It would be truly tragic if she has been severed completely from them...yet at the same time; the old Korra is now long gone and will become part of the New Age, which hopefully will provide greater stories to be told.
